            Chapter One

Donghae tried really hard not to think about it. It was difficult, considering the person was just right across the library. He turned his face away and tried to go back to what he was doing on the computer. Or what he was supposed to be doing, really. The computers in the lab had been full, so his teacher had sent him to do his research in the library. All he could say about that was that it was one hell of a way to treat the new kid.

He swallowed, still completely aware of the intense stare coming from his left, right at the side of his face. He wondered what he had done to piss the guy off – like, seriously, was he sitting at his favorite computer or something? Flirt with the wrong girl?

He couldn’t help it – he glanced up just to make sure his brain wasn’t playing tricks on him and upon seeing a dark, narrow-eyed gaze meet his, he averted his eyes back to the small print on the computer screen. Now was the point when he became fidgety. He was hardly confrontational; not a single bone in his body genuinely wanted to look over and demand that the person either say what the hell he wanted to or stop staring.

The guy really wasn’t that intimidating in terms of stature. His arms didn’t look any more powerful than Donghae’s, nor did his legs look any quicker. But the look in his eyes that spoke louder than any voice, practically had Donghae dead on the spot, intimidated Donghae beyond belief.

Donghae swallowed hard, fears becoming real the moment the guy across the library stood up, closing the novel he hadn’t been reading until Donghae had sat down. He picked up a black binder from the table and headed in Donghae’s direction rather pointedly, stare still boring into Donghae’s face.

Donghae had enough sense not to say a word as the boy approached, book clutched in tense fingers and binder tucked at his side.

Without saying a single word, the boy stopped just at Donghae’s side and set the book on the desk in front of him. He didn’t move immediately, placing a hand on the book and sliding it closer to Donghae before withdrawing, turning around, and leaving as if nothing had happened.

Donghae’s eyes followed the boy out the doors of the library with a bit of relief. He turned back around and laid his eyes on the book with confusion, reading the cover and letting his fingers brush the spine.

The 120 Days of Sodom.

Now, obviously a book with a title like that couldn’t be good news. Donghae realized he shouldn’t just leave the book there. Deciding he could either track the guy down and give it back and risk confrontation or just keep it and wait until the guy asked for it, Donghae picked up the book and left the library.

It wasn’t until much later – about three days, really – that Donghae actually thought about the book again aside from setting it on his dresser when he returned from school with it. He might have even forgotten about it if he hadn’t spotted the guy that had given it to him in the hallway on the way to class. He was pretty sure the guy hadn’t seen him, though he had been too concerned with getting to class on time to think much about it.

He arrived home later than he was used to. His old school let out about twenty minutes earlier, but he didn’t really care that much about that. He tossed his bag onto the bed and went to his dresser to pick up the book and examine the cover.

It was paperback and plain white with black print, the pages giving about an inch and a half in thickness. He didn’t care to read the back, really, or even start at the beginning. He flipped through the book and immediately found a dog-eared page, about three quarters of the way in. He started reading about halfway down the page.

The slapped the book closed, eyes wide as saucers.

He was definitely returning the book, freaky staring problem be damned.

However, Donghae wasn’t successful in finding the guy on Friday and resolved that afternoon to hunt him down first thing Monday. Other than the guy from the library, Donghae had very little going on in his life. He had made a few friends that seemed to deem him as spacey and a ditz, but he supposed it was okay that they took his thoughtful expressions for ones of blankness and stupidity. It made his life easier, not having to live up to anyone’s standards. Might as well establish himself as an idiot now and not have to deal with the “I thought you were supposed to be smart!” shit later on.

“There he goes again.” Eunhyuk, one of the people Donghae was a bit more fond of, waved a hand in front of his face as if he were blind and it was fun to pick on the handicapped.

Donghae blinked and gave Eunhyuk a sheepish smile, earning a few laughs from the others sitting around him in the class.

“At least he doesn’t drool,” Sungmin said. Donghae really couldn’t decide whether he liked or disliked Sungmin. He knew he’d eventually get used to him, but that didn’t hide the fact that Donghae considered Sungmin as a bit narcissistic, perhaps a bit of a know-it-all. Maybe it just took some getting used to. It would explain why Eunhyuk tolerated him.

He hadn’t really tried hard to learn the others’ names, but he did recognize their faces. Donghae looked away from the group and to the book on his desk. Eunhyuk had read the back out loud to their little group and they didn’t have to read any more than the few sentences he had to understand it was an offensive book.

He chewed on the inside of his lip as he gazed at the cover blankly, trying not to damage a painful little cut on his bottom lip any further. It was a bad habit, but when he did it he didn’t even realize he was and so it wasn’t easy to just stop. At last, he picked up the book with the objective of going directly to the library, handing it to the librarian, and leaving it in her care.

After getting permission, he started phase one of his three-step plan, though he almost got lost once on the way. He entered and turned to the desk right at the entrance, a bit disappointed to see she wasn’t behind the desk.

“She’s out.”

Donghae didn’t recognize the voice, but noticed it was extremely likable with its deep, rich quality. Even the precise, curt wording didn’t detract from it at all. He turned, expecting to meet a friendly smile, and tried not to let his jaw drop at the person that had spoken.

“I see you didn’t read it,” the boy that had given him the novel stated, eyes trained on Donghae’s face exactly as before.

“You …” – Donghae stopped to clear his throat – “have weird taste in books.” He looked away as he spoke, but not down at the white book in his hand.

The guy stood up from his seat at a round table and left the black binder from before lying there as he crossed the library in quick, measured steps until he stopped in front of Donghae. Before he had much time to process anything, the boy had confiscated the book from his hand with resentment in his narrowed eyes. “You didn’t even read it. How would you know if it’s any good or not?”

Donghae didn’t answer, tried not to look directly into the piercing, intrusive stare that was only a foot or so from him.

“What’s your name?” the boy suddenly asked, backing up a few steps and taking a seat in a nearby chair.

“You don’t know the new guy’s name already?” Donghae asked without really thinking. It kind of made him mad that this prick acted like Donghae had been obligated to read the damn book for some reason.

“It’s only polite to introduce yourself,” the boy said as he leaned back and stretched out an arm on the counter behind him.

“Donghae.”

The boy’s head tilted slightly downwards as if he needed to adjust his stare to accommodate the new information.

“Yours?” Donghae asked. He was starting to fidget again, chewing on his lip out of anxiety.

“Why should I tell you?” the guy asked frankly. There was a sadistic look in his eyes, like he enjoyed pissing people off and seeing them get flustered.

“It’s only polite to introduce yourself,” Donghae parroted, backing up and leaning back against the librarian’s desk because that seemed like the only thing to do with himself besides stand there awkwardly.

A crooked smirk grew on the boy’s face and he flipped through the pages of the book in silence for a moment. “I never claimed to be polite,” he finally stated.

Donghae rolled his eyes and turned to leave. The guy wasn’t intimidating at all – just an asshole that liked fucking with new people.

“Donghae,” the boy called after him, and without looking at his face, Donghae could hear the likable, friendliness in his voice again.

Donghae looked over his shoulder at the smirking boy.

“Do come by the library more often.”

Fuck you, Donghae wanted to say. He never planned to go in that place again – especially now that he knew that was the bastard’s lair or whatever.

When Donghae woke up the next morning, he had the fleeting thought that the asshole had casted a hex on him or something because he felt like absolute shit. His throat was sore, his nose was runny, and when he looked in the mirror he looked red and swollen in the eyes. Downstairs, he dug around in one of his mom’s bathroom drawers in search of a thermometer.

“Donghae? What are you doing?” his mom asked as she entered the bathroom, half-asleep because she didn’t have to wake up early in the mornings since she quit her job.

Donghae licked his chapped lips and sighed. “I need a thermometer,” he mumbled.

His mom wasn’t even awake enough to roll her eyes at him, so she simply opened the bathroom cabinet and pulled the thermometer out of a little cup with a tube of itch medicine and some other junk in it. She took his temperature because she claimed he always did it wrong, but sure enough, Donghae had a fever.

He went back to bed, but when he fell asleep he had a dream about The 120 Days of Sodom. It wasn’t scary, though it was enough to remind him what a freak the guy from the library had to be to read something that had given him a weird dream from just a sentence or two. He didn’t think about it the entire day, spending his sick time watching TV and zoning out on the couch.

Unfortunately for him, he had missed an English test and had to retake it. He really wanted to throw a fit and demand they send him somewhere else when his teacher sent the librarian a message to allow Donghae to take his test with her. But he figured he could deal with it when he entered the library and there were only the librarian and two other younger students present. He sat down at a table with his test and his chewed up pencil, scrawling his name across the top and ignoring the actual line for it a centimeter or so away.

The first questions were easy – but that didn’t mean Donghae knew any of them. He hadn’t even read the book. The teacher had handed him a novel on his first day, said “read it,” and then proceeded with her lesson. She was also the one that made him write a report in one class period when everyone else was almost finished with it. Bitch.

Donghae at least knew the first question, the name of the book, but the second question didn’t seem that fair. How was he supposed to know who the author was? He hadn’t even begun reading the book, much less check and see who wrote it.

“Hello, there.”

Donghae jumped, squeezed his pencil as his eyes darted in front of him and saw the asshole from before sitting at the table directly across from him.

“Kyuhyun, I’ll be right back. Make sure Donghae doesn’t cheat,” the librarian said as she walked out the door.

Kyuhyun. That was what she had said. The ass’s name was Kyuhyun. “What do you want?” Donghae asked as he went back to his paper and decided to skip the second question. Not that he knew the third or fourth, either, but it made him look busy.

“Why can’t you answer those?” Kyuhyun asked, but Donghae refused to look up.

“I didn’t have a chance to read it,” Donghae replied quietly. He was about ten seconds away from just circling answers randomly and turning it in with a sheepish smile while saying “I did my best!” to the English teacher-bitch.

“Like you didn’t have the chance to read the one I gave you, right? Even though you were absent the entire day yesterday. You probably watched TV all day,” Kyuhyun stated, and Donghae had looked up somewhere around the word “absent”.

Donghae chewed on the inside corner of his mouth, twisting his pencil in his fingers. He could get up and move. Hurry up and circle answers and leave before the librarian came back.

“The answer,” Kyuhyun said, his voice lowering as his arm stretched across the table and his finger stopped on top of the second question on Donghae’s test, “is C.”

Donghae looked up from the hand on his paper and at the serious, aloof face in front of him. He couldn’t read the expression at all beyond one of an asshole, and assholes didn’t help people on tests. They wanted them to fail.

“Or don’t take my word for it,” Kyuhyun said. “It’s not like you’re going to pass anyways.”

Rolling his eyes, Donghae went ahead and circled C. He supposed it was a better guess than his own.

“Don’t do that.”

Gaze snapping back up to meet Kyuhyun’s, Donghae asked the question with his eyes.

“Most impolite thing in the world,” Kyuhyun said, leaning back in his chair. “Rolling your eyes at someone.”

“I never claimed to be polite,” Donghae stated.

“The next one is A,” Kyuhyun said rather than bitching at him some more.

He made no move to answer the question, only leaned forward and narrowed his eyes at Kyuhyun in a mirror of his expression. “Why are you helping me?”

Kyuhyun leaned forward as well, as if their conversation had become a copy-cat match to see who would mimic the other’s posture better. “Why didn’t you read the book?”

“That has nothing to do with –”

“Exactly,” Kyuhyun interrupted, tilting his head downwards and intensifying his condescending stare. “My answer is irrelevant. So either take my answers or leave them.”

“Do you have this class?” Donghae asked, pulling his hand away as Kyuhyun tried to take his pencil.

“Right before you do,” Kyuhyun replied. “Answer to the next one is A.”

Donghae circled it without a second thought. “Then why don’t I ever see you in the hall?”

“I’m not always late like you are,” Kyuhyun deadpanned. “Next one is B.”

“What did you do – memorize the answers?” Donghae asked with a snort of laughter as he answered the next one. When Kyuhyun was silent for a long stretch, he looked up to see a smirk on his face.

“Yes.”

For some reason, whether because the answer could mean several different things or because the lop-sided grin on Kyuhyun’s face was just plain creepy, a chill shot down Donghae’s back. They stared at each other for a long moment, Kyuhyun’s leering face only becoming more and more amused as the seconds ticked by.

Kyuhyun snatched the paper from Donghae and pulled out his own pencil, circling answers down the page.

“I think I’m capable of writing the answers myself,” Donghae grumbled, resting his chin on his hand and watching as Kyuhyun finished his test for him.

“That was taking too long,” Kyuhyun stated as he turned to the second page, circling answers without even appearing to read the questions.

He watched quietly as Kyuhyun finished and stuck his pencil back into his black binder. “Thanks,” Donghae said, a bit begrudgingly as he picked up the paper and stared at it for lack of something better to look at.

And then it was back to that damned stare. Only this time Kyuhyun was a lot closer and Donghae could see the wicked shine on his dark irises, the slight pout of his concentrated mouth. It was kind of hard to imagine him smiling; his mouth looked like it wasn’t even capable of curving upwards unless it was scornful or at another’s expense.

“Better turn that test in,” Kyuhyun said at about the same time Donghae realized they had just been in a serious stare-off and snapped out of it.

Well, that was something they had in common. They both stared a lot.

Donghae nodded and pushed his chair back to stand up. He knew Kyuhyun stared at him the entire time as he left the library with his completed test, and Donghae couldn’t find it in himself to be anything except in wonder. He didn’t understand Kyuhyun at all. He was a complete ass and most definitely knew it. Used it to his advantage, even. But at the same time he seemed to want to befriend Donghae in a way, like Donghae was just some guy and Kyuhyun figured what the hell – might as well start trying to be a human being sometime.

Hi! I decided to create an account here (how does this thing works, anyway) just to review your fic, since I figured using Tumblr for that will be much more complicated.

KyuHyun Reading Marquis de Sade?! So, yeah, Kyuhyun is a complete and frustrating ass here and I like that. I can’t blame Donghae for being confused with Kyu’s behavior.

You know, I’m quite blind, so I had to copy the chapter in word and use a bigger font to be able to read it, but I almost freaked out when Word wouldn’t scroll down anymore, making mw realize that I had reached the end of the chapter. You left me intrigued.

Thank you so much for letting me know you had uploaded the first chapter. I’m really looking forward for the next.

Tbh, I saw the poll about what KyuHae you'll write next late and this was actually not in my choices just bcoz from your description, Kyuhyun is going to be a major asshole in this *hugs ultimate bias* lolol.

BUT i'm actually liking this! And I fear for Hae, Kyu is more like a creep than an ass in this chap. I hope Kyu doesn't scar him too much XD Looking forward to the next chaps!

Gaaaah, what does it say about me and my capacity for healthy relationships that I think this Kyuhyun is just all freakin' kinds of hot? Probably something bad ; 3; But hey, why be healthy when HOLY FUCK THAT IS A HOT KYUHYUN.

I truly sympathize with Donghae. I mean, even normal and sweet something about that boy is simply hypnotic but now? When he's evil. Oooh, you write it so well, the dark charm oozes off my screen and I'm enthralled and dead to the world * Q* Seeeeexxxxxy.

(On a side note: Number 3)

Because my priorities aren't all there.
I have to agree 100% with Kyuhyun, people rolling their eyes at you is the most impolite and annoying thing a person can do and it personally makes me feel like slapping them really hard across the face.

But I'm a nice person, so I don't do that.

I'm happy that this was the story you chose to upload because this is so freaking awesome.

I like how this chapter sets well the awkwardness in their relationship, poor Donghae all left to wonder what Kyuhyun has in mind!

Keep it up!

As in... you know.

Love to you!!! <3<3

~Cheers.

Hey dear ! New reader here ~

I've just landed here because I've found out about "Learning to breathe" and I had to read this first to understand it, right ?

I really enjoyed reading this. The way you settle things is great. I could nearly see them act that way with each other ... Kyu being an asshole is my favourite one XD

And, well, I'm really curious about Kyu reading The 120 days of Sodom, actually. You know, hum, my mother language is French and this book is a kind of legendary book for French culture, and when I was a bit younger I took the decision to read all the "classical" books that I could find, for my own personal culture. In French, there's a well known saying: "Je ne veux pas mourir idiote", that you can translate by "I don't want to die as a stupid person who knows nothing". I actually read The 120 Days or at least I tried. This book is just unreadable. It's very difficult to read it and to stand every action described and word used. It's not the kind of book I would recommand a teenager to read so, here's my point: How come Kyu read it ? And why does he give it to Hae ? I know it's probably not the main and the more important fact here but really, I'm very very curious about this ^^

Well, so, I'll just go to the next chapter now, and I'm sorry for both my long and random comment and my not so good English (Probably made a few mistakes ^^)
