Part 1 // Part 2
You’re not supposed to do that to the person you love - he knew it. Maybe it made sense to some people, but he simply couldn’t fathom why Kyuhyun thought it was the right thing to do. He had left him alone to wonder about Kyuhyun 24/7 for days and days. He never knew if Kyuhyun would be found dead the next morning or show back up on his doorstep with a bullet wound.
He had wanted to call so badly. It had ate at him so intensely that he had shoved his phone in a kitchen drawer with hopes of forgetting about it, only to run back less than an hour later to frantically rummage through the drawer for the device and check for missed calls from Kyuhyun.
When Ryeowook finally contacted him and let him know Kyuhyun was safe for the time being, Donghae had wanted to cry with relief. Instead of letting Ryeowook hang up as usual, he had tried to coax information from him. Ryeowook, being a very smart man, had caught on right away and told Donghae to stay at his home until Kyuhyun returned. Which may or may not have even happened, but Ryeowook hadn’t said that out loud.
And so he had called Ryeowook repeatedly for hours on end – determined to find out where Kyuhyun was. He wasn’t sure if he had fully intended to go after him at that time – he had been switching between thoughts of Kyuhyun being thousands of miles away already and Kyuhyun being only down the street, keeping just out of Donghae’s sight.
Finally, after Ryeowook had decided to pick up the phone, he had blurted out directions and Donghae had decided right then to go.
Honestly, he had been utterly crushed when Kyuhyun had almost immediately told him to go home. Hours of seemingly hopeless calls – hours of driving that might not have even been leading him the right way – hours of worrying himself sick and driving him almost insane and Kyuhyun had told him to go back. Donghae knew it was because Kyuhyun didn’t want him to get hurt, but at that point he didn’t care.
Donghae lay in bed next to Kyuhyun, so close but not touching him. He knew Kyuhyun was a light sleeper and always tried his best not to wake him early in the mornings. Donghae didn’t usually wake up early, but for some reason he couldn’t go back to sleep. Maybe he needed to use this time to gaze at Kyuhyun’s sleeping face while he tried to distract himself from thoughts of the future.
He wanted to kiss Kyuhyun awake like in romantic movies, but at the same time he didn’t want to disturb Kyuhyun’s sleep.
It had been almost a week since they had reunited and Kyuhyun had only left the hotel room twice to go to the store. They were supposed to leave that day since Ryeowook had called to let them know they were being followed. Kyuhyun hadn’t said anything, but Donghae knew he was becoming upset that he now had the burden of a human life on his hands. He had wanted to say something – apologize, offer to go back. But he wasn’t really sorry and he didn’t want to leave.
If Donghae had learned anything in his life, it was not to voluntarily do anything you might regret later in life. He couldn’t always follow the rule, but it did help him make better choices. When he had decided to go after Kyuhyun, he had promised himself not to regret it. So far, he wasn’t having any problems.
Kyuhyun inhaled and sighed softly, his lips parting. It reminded Donghae of when they first met – Donghae had been stupidly drunk, swaggering up to Kyuhyun with a goofy smile. Kyuhyun’s dark, curly hair and plump pink lips had been the first thing on Donghae’s mind, the second being his incredibly sarcastic sense of humor revealed after ten minutes of conversation. The third had been there the entire time, but had taken him months to notice: Kyuhyun was perfect for Donghae.
With a sigh of his own, Donghae lifted himself up onto his elbow, resting his cheek on his hand. He really should let Kyuhyun sleep. Kyuhyun had a busy day ahead of him and needed the rest. But he could always go back to sleep… No, Donghae thought, he wouldn’t. If they were home, he definitely would. Here, Kyuhyun would wake up and start packing immediately.
However, there was a chance Donghae wouldn’t wake him. It was only a slight chance, and it really might not be worth it.
Donghae paused a moment to think about the softness of Kyuhyun’s lips he had missed.
Actually, he thought, it would be totally worth it.
He leaned down and tilted his head sideways slightly, gently pressing his lips against Kyuhyun’s and withdrawing after a brief second.
Kyuhyun’s eyes fluttered open and he looked up to find Donghae’s face. “Good morning,” he said, his voice dry.
“Good morning. How did you sleep?” Donghae asked with a smile down at Kyuhyun.
“Would have been better in my own bed,” Kyuhyun replied and rolled over onto his side to face Donghae. “We have to leave today,” he said.
Donghae didn’t say anything for a few moments, simply watching Kyuhyun rub the sleep from his eyes and run his hands over his face.
“When can we go home?” he asked finally.
Kyuhyun sat up, finger-combing his hair and at the same time shaking his head. “We can’t. Not until we – I find who’s after me,” he said, from his voice obviously stressed already after only seconds of being awake.
Donghae remained silent, sitting up and leaning forward to rest his cheek on Kyuhyun’s shoulder. “I guess we should get going,” he whispered before turning his face and placing a kiss on Kyuhyun’s skin.
Quicker than Donghae had initially imagined, they were packed and on the road. Kyuhyun didn’t seem to want to tell him where they were driving to, and so Donghae refrained from asking. He sat and watched out the window, mesmerized by the passing houses and streets.
Boredom finally sinking in, Donghae sat back in his seat and looked around the car for something to do. It wasn’t Kyuhyun’s car – he had noticed that immediately when Kyuhyun had opened the trunk and started loading Donghae’s suitcase inside.
“Whose car is this?” Donghae asked, fiddling with the lock button on his armrest.
“A friend’s,” Kyuhyun replied, never taking his eyes off the road as they pulled onto a large highway. That could only mean one thing – they were leaving town.
“Oh.” Donghae realized Kyuhyun wasn’t in the mood to talk and tapped his fingers on his knee idly, thinking of things to take his mind off his current situation, which was easier said than done.
Eventually, once Donghae decided that letting his thoughts wonder was only going to lead right back to the fact that Kyuhyun was wanted dead by some strange people and they were now on the run, he reached over and tried to figure out how to work the stereo. After pressing nearly every button he could find, the stereo lit up and beeped. Static sputtered through the speakers until Donghae found a pop radio station.
“Change it,” Kyuhyun ordered immediately after listening to the first three words of the chorus.
Donghae let out a laugh, but didn’t change the station. “I like this song,” he said and shielded the seek button from Kyuhyun’s insistent fingers.
“I hate it,” Kyuhyun said and pushed Donghae’s hand away, only to have his own slapped at. With a sigh of frustration, Kyuhyun clamped both hands on the steering wheel and pouted at the road in front of him. “You don’t even know this song,” Kyuhyun grumbled.
“You’re such a brat.” Donghae said, snorting as he switched the station to one Kyuhyun would like and sat back in his chair to lean against his window with an amused grin.
Kyuhyun glanced over and then turned back to the road with an intense glare. “Stop looking at me like that,” he demanded, pout even more pronounced.
When Donghae leaned over and kissed Kyuhyun on the cheek, the pout melted into a slightly confused but much more pleasant look. Donghae returned to his own seat and rested his head against the window, eyes struggling to keep up with the passing cars.
Donghae woke to the car shaking around as it drove over a speed bump. He sat up and looked around, surprised to see they were pulling into a small fast food restaurant.
Kyuhyun was already getting out of the car and closing his door behind him as Donghae unbuckled to follow after him.
“Do you think they’re still serving breakfast?” Donghae asked as Kyuhyun held open the door for him. Inside, there were only a few people sitting and eating quietly.
“It’s just past twelve. I doubt it,” Kyuhyun stated and led Donghae around to the counter to order.
While Kyuhyun looked up at the menu with his hands in his jacket pockets, Donghae sidestepped closer to him and slipped his hand inside Kyuhyun’s pocket and interlaced their fingers. Though Kyuhyun seemed to be ignoring him, Donghae knew from the way Kyuhyun’s fingers tightened around his that he was well aware and appreciative of the contact.
After ordering and getting their food – not without odd looks from the cashier – they found a table at the back of the building to sit down at and eat.
“You don’t want to leave now?” Donghae asked, wondering if Kyuhyun had forgotten about their whole predicament.
“I’m tired of driving,” Kyuhyun replied simply and bit into his burger.
“I’ll drive,” Donghae said and ate a few French-fries. “You don’t think it’s… um, unsafe?” he asked, feeling suddenly conscious of the strangers around him. They could be anyone – they could be watching them and waiting for them to drop their guard – they could be following them to their next hotel.
Kyuhyun sighed and set his burger down, wiping his hands on a napkin. He leaned forward to speak in a hushed voice. “I understand you being worried, but you should calm down and eat now. If I thought it was dangerous, I wouldn’t have stopped. We’re miles away from where we were and no one has been following us.”
Donghae stared at Kyuhyun blankly for a few moments before picking up his burger and taking a bite. “Don’t act like you haven’t been paranoid, too,” Donghae grumbled with a mouthful of food. “It’s probably eating you up just to sit there normally in public.”
With a smirk, Kyuhyun waved a French-fry at Donghae silently as if to say “touché” and then ate it.
They finished eating and Donghae begged for ice-cream until Kyuhyun gave him five dollars and he bounded off to buy some. He sat in the car happily, eating his ice-cream from the little cup as Kyuhyun pulled out of the parking lot and back onto the highway.
“How long until we get there?” Donghae asked between spoonfuls of vanilla ice-cream.
"Long enough," Kyuhyun replied simply.
For the rest of the car ride, Donghae was either asleep or talking to Kyuhyun when he was in the mood. Sometimes he’d wake up to Kyuhyun singing along to a song on the radio. In that case, he’d closed his eyes and pretended to be asleep as he listened.
It was late in the evening when Kyuhyun pulled into a hotel parking lot and went inside to buy them a room. When he came back to the car, he seemed a bit unpleased to inform Donghae that they were on the first floor.
“At least we don’t have to carry our bags up stairs,” Donghae said as he helped Kyuhyun unload the trunk and drag their two suitcases to the door to their hotel room.
Kyuhyun looked around at the layout of the hotel, a frown on his face. “I don’t like it,” Kyuhyun said, face contorting as if the entire room disgusted him.
Donghae shook his head and waited as Kyuhyun unlocked their door and let them inside. Upon turning on the lights, he noticed it wasn’t that bad of a room – the comforters weren’t hideous, the carpets were clean.
With one last look around outside, Kyuhyun came in and locked the door, setting the lock and turning around. He fiddled with his pockets, emptying the car keys and his cell phone onto the night stand before finally sensing Donghae’s eyes on him and looking up to meet his gaze. Wordlessly, he closed the short distance between them and pulled Donghae into a hug, burying his face in Donghae’s neck.
Donghae didn’t want to think about how apologetic the hug felt – or how sorry the kisses that followed were - much less how incredibly remorseful the sex that ensued was. He didn’t want to acknowledge that Kyuhyun felt like everything was his fault or that Donghae knew most of it was his own. He pretended he didn’t hear Kyuhyun’s words, telling him he’d try to get them home as soon as possible and that he was so, so sorry. He only heard “I love you” and even then couldn’t think clearly enough to reply.
When Kyuhyun collapsed next to him, his breathing heavy and his eyes half-lidded, Donghae exhaled and closed his eyes. He opened them again, fighting the sleepiness trying to overtake him. He dampened his lips with his tongue and leaned over for a short kiss, pulling away and letting his head rest on the pillow inches from Kyuhyun’s face.
Kyuhyun was so beautiful. Beautiful and so perfect for Donghae. All the time he spent away worrying himself crazy and crying every lonely night he had thought only of Kyuhyun. He slid closer and tried to get as much of himself against Kyuhyun as possible, even with the sheets tangling around him and the pillows fighting him every inch of the way.
As Donghae’s eyes slowly slid closed, the last few things on his mind were a mixture of worried, confused thoughts about tomorrow and how satisfying it felt that he was with Kyuhyun finally.
